SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT

Man With A Pigeon Living On His Head sample

He has a pigeon who lives on his head and he has resigned himself to that fate. I first saw this uploaded by the BBC Archive a few years back, but I can't find an upload from them anymore. Here's someone else who has uploaded it.

1) THE SONICS - Good Golly Miss Molly

First made famous by Little Richard in 1956, The Sonics recorded this version nine years later for their debut LP 'Here Are The Sonics'.

2) CAT BUTT - Born Loser

From the only Cat Butt album, 1989's 'Journey To The Center Of...', released on Sub Pop. It was only ever been released on vinyl back then, and hasn't been reissued ever.

3) THE URINALS - Sex

The a-side to the third Urinals 7" release in 1980. All their original 7" releases were collected with compilation appearances, outtakes and some live stuff in 1996 for the 'Negative Capability... Check It Out!' compilation, which was first released on Amphetamine Reptile on CD only. In recent years, it has been reissued on CD and vinyl by Happy Squid and In The Red respectively.

4) THE WEDDING PRESENT - Fleshworld

Taken from the 1991 Lovenest EP, you will find this track along with many other b-sides on deluxe reissues of the band's Seamonsters album.

5) SHADY - Sugar Sugar Sugar

After original Mercury Rev singer parted ways with them, he released the album 'World' under the name Shady, on Beggars Banquet. Unfortunately due to some subsequent shite put out by Eminem, this is quite a hard record to Google. It's a great one though, with tons of musicians guesting on it. It's long out of print and hopefully one day we will see a reissue from the Beggars Arkive. Who knows. David Baker went on to release the Variety Lights record on Fire in 2012 but hasn't released anything since then. Maybe in 2029.

The Curious Case Of The Blocked Window sample

Don't fuck about when it comes to the law of ancient lights. Watch the full clip from an episode of Nationwide in 1972 here.

6) THE BETA BAND - It's Not Too Beautiful

The second track on The Beta Band's 1999 eponymous debut album. The album's reputation took a big hit from the band themselves, who felt that it was unfinished and proclaimed it to be shit upon release. It wasn't shit of course, but it is a bit batshit at times.

7) ELLIOTT SMITH - Christian Brothers

From Elliott Smith's eponymous second album, released in 1995. There's a good CD reissue from Kill Rock Stars for the 25th anniversary which has an early live set which is worth checking out.

8) GRANDADDY - Black Bats

From the essentially unreleased 1994 album 'Complex Party Come Along Theories'. Grandaddy have quite a few extremely limited self-released cassette-only releases from those early years before signing to V2. They are all available online if you search for them, but it would be great to see them, especially this one and 'Don't Sock The Tryer' get the proper release they deserve.

Mrs Mary Anderson's Indoor Caravans sample

She used to have three caravans inside her house, but now she only has two. Find out why she got rid of the third one by watching the full clip from a 1972 episode of Nationwide here.

9) DAMON ALBARN - Combustion

From Damon's 2021 LP 'The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows', released on Transgressive. There was a mighty digital deluxe edition of this with tons of bonus tracks including one entitled 'The Bollocked Man'. Physical releases do not have all of those goodies unfortunately.

10) THE FOUR FRESHMEN - Dynaflow

From their 1962 album 'The Swingers'. While it's easy to find used copies of Four Freshmen albums on vinyl (watch out for the duophonic releases, though), on CD it's a bit complicated. The good stuff from the 50s and 60s are usually released on those cheapo 'four classic album' sets across 2 CDs with crappy artwork.

11) HANDSOME BOY MODELING SCHOOL FEAT. KID KOALA - The Runway Song

Chest Rockwell and Nathaniel Merriweather team up with Kid Koala to soundtrack the Handsome Boys' runway walks. From the 1999 HBMS debut LP 'So... How's Your Girl?', released on Tommy Boy.

12) MAJOR FORCE E.M.S. ORCHESTRA - Here Comes The Funky Monkey

In 1999, Mo' Wax released the compilation 'Major Force West '93-'97', comprising of some tracks recorded in the Major Force West studio in the Mo' Wax offices on the Caledonian Road. The building was previously the home to Madness' own 'Zarjazz' records and studio, I believe.

The Upside Down Grimond Library sample

A BBC April Fools prank from 1976 that aired on Nationwide, in which they report that the library in Grimond was built upside down due to a photocopying error. Classic. Watch it here.

13) OPAL - Harriet Brown

This track first saw release on the 1989 'Early Recordings' compilation. Recent reissues of that compilation and the 'Happy Nightmare Baby' LP were thwarted due to estate disagreements and the majority of copies were destroyed. What a pointless waste.

14) GALAXIE 500 - Temperature's Rising

From the 1988 album 'Today', which has been reissued by various labels on CD and vinyl over the years. It's not been in print on CD in years (I recommend the Rykodisc version) but it was reissued recently on vinyl by Naomi Yang & Damon Krukowski's own '20|20|20' label.

15) JANE'S ADDICTION - Classic Girl

From the 1990 album 'Ritual De Lo Habitual'. RIP Jane's Addiction.
