Here are some notes on the twenty-second 'Secret Sauces Radio' mix, which can be listened to on Mixcloud here...

SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT

1) DJ SHADOW - Hardcore (Instrumental) Hip Hop

Credited to The Groove Robbers Featuring DJ Shadow, this track was released as a split 12" single with Chief Xcel's 'Fully Charged On Planet X' in 1996. Solesides (aka Quannum) released it in the US, and Mo'Wax released it in the UK on their 'Excursions' sub-label.

2) ASIA BORN - Send Them (Instrumental)

And this track was also released as a split 12" (and cassette!) single on Solesides (in 1993), with the other side being DJ Shadow and the Groove Robbers' near-18 minute epic 'Entropy'. Asia Born is best known as Lyrics Born - this is the only release under this alias, and he also produced the track.

3) BEASTIE BOYS - 33% God

This is an instrumental remixed version of Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique classic 'Shake Your Rump', released on the 'Love American Style' EP in 1989. There were a bunch of similar instrumental remixed versions of Paul's Boutique tracks on that EP and the Shadrach EP, but both have been out of print for decades and are highly sought after. The Dust Brothers' insane sample-based production on Paul's Boutique is brought to the fore on these versions, and I wish they were more easily available. Maybe there's just too many samples for Capitol to re-clear them? Fuck knows! But they're all worth tracking down.

4) PUBLIC ENEMY - War At 33⅓

Vocals! Taken from Public Enemy's 1990 third album 'Fear Of A Black Planet', crafted by more sample-based production legends The Bomb Squad.

5) BOO-YA T.R.I.B.E. - Psyko Funk (Remix)

This remix was by Prince Paul, and the original was produced by Tony G, which can be found on their debut album from 1990, 'New Funky Nation' and has several tracks produced by the Dust Brothers.

6) TWIGY FEAT. DEV LARGE - 聖戦 Part II

Produced by Prince Paul, and taken from the '聖戦' EP, which translates to English as 'Holy War'.

7) DJ KRUSH - A Whim

The a-side from another 12" split single released on Mo'Wax where the other side is from DJ Shadow. This one was released in 1995 on the main label, and also received a CD single release.

8) DE LA SOUL - Millie Pulled A Pistol On Santa (Full Mix Instrumental)

This mix of the haunting De La Soul track (original found on their 1991 second album 'De La Soul Is Dead') uses a very different beat, which Prince Paul re-used on the Gravediggaz track 'Mommy, What's A Gravedigga?' three years later in 1994. The RZArector made his own mix, which uses Paul's beat as a foundation but is a few minutes longer than the interlude-type length of the album version - check it out here.

9) KID KOALA - Stompin' At Le Savoi

Taken from Kid Koala's second album 'Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs', released in 2003 by Ninja Tune. As always, make sure to check out the physical CD or LP release for a nice comic from Kid Koala included.

10) AUTOMATOR - 4:17

Better known as Dan The Automator nowadays, in 1996 Automator released the 'A Better Tomorrow' EP on Ubiquity Records, which included the title track featuring vocals from "Kool Keith's brother... Sinister 6000!" (it's Kool Keith of course) and some great instrumental tracks - including this one.

In 2000, Dan expanded the EP into the album 'A Much Better Tomorrow' with tracks recorded from the same period on his own 75 Ark label, featuring loads more Sinister 6000 action. Highly recommended.

11) NAS - It Ain't Hard To Tell (The Laid Back Instrumental Remix)

The Laid Back Remix of Nas' second single 'It Ain't Hard To Tell' was originally released on the 1994 UK remix 12" of the track, and didn't receive a release on CD or in the U.S. at all. The vocal version of the remix can be found on the 2014 'Illmatic XX' deluxe 2CD release, and this instrumental can only be found by tracking down an original 12". Happy hunting!

12) TYCOON TO$H & TERMINATOR TROOPS - World Is Crazy

This is the instrumental version of Tycoon To$h & Terminator Troops' second single 'Get Happy!' found on the b-side of the original 1988 Major Force 12". You can find the vocal version of that track on the 1989 'Major Force Compact Vol. 1' CD (later reissued as a double disc with Vol. 2 and bonus tracks in 2006), and you can find this instrumental on Mo'Wax's 1997 'Major Force - The Original Art-Form' compilation on CD and vinyl.

13) METABOLICS - Laxed Linguistics

Taken from Metabolics' only album, 'The M-Virus', released on WordSound Records in 1998. The vinyl release of this album contains fewer tracks than the CD, but this gem is on both formats. With typically great rhymes from Mr. Dead and Big Pat (RIP), this track - like most of the album - was produced by Prince Paul protégé Bimos, who released very little of his productions outside of this album. I hope that the instrumentals and other unheard beats are sitting somewhere, ready to be heard by the world one day.

14) DR. DOOOM - You Live At Home With Your Mom

Another Kool Keith character, Dr. Dooom, who murders another Kool Keith character Dr. Octagon in the first track of the delightfully deranged 'First Come, First Served' album, which sports a surreal pisstake of the tacky Pen & Pixel designed album covers of the time, created by Pen & Pixel themselves!

15) CZARFACE & MF DOOM FEAT. DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN - Jason And The Czargonauts

Taken from Czarface (7L & Esoteric and Inspectah Deck)'s second album with MF DOOM, 'Super What', released in 2021, just seven months after DOOM's untimely passing. Another great 'Czar' pun as we have come to expect over the years.

16) PRINCE PAUL - Sucker For Love

Even more Prince Paul to finish things off! This track was first released on the WordSound compilation 'Subterranean Hitz Vol. 1' in 1997, and it found a home on Paul's 2005 compilation 'Hip Hop Gold Dust'.
