SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT

Leave Me To My Lotions sample

Not that it's any of your business, but you can put a face to the voice here

1) ALICE IN CHAINS - Dam That River

Taken from the second AIC album, 1992's 'Dirt'. It's still in print on CD and vinyl. I don't have anything much interesting to say about this track, and I haven't kept up with any of the post-Layne stuff but those original records are decent.

2) CIRCLE JERKS - World Up My Ass

This classic is from their 1980 debut album 'Group Sex'. When this album first appeared on CD, they put the album on the disc twice as it is only 15 minutes long. They could have put it on 5 times. There was a nice 40th anniversary deluxe CD with a couple of rehearsal bonus tracks and a big fat booklet stuffed with testimonials about Circle Jerks from lots of cool people. Check it out.

3) APHEX TWIN - Slo Bird Whistle (Peel Sesh)

This track was recorded for a BBC Radio 1 John Peel Session in April 1995. It then appeared as part of Richard's huge Soundcloud dumps, and then the whole session received an official release on vinyl by Warp as 'Peel Session 2' which you can buy here.

4) THE GADGETS - Autumn 80

From the debut Gadgets LP, 'Gadgetree', which features album artwork of some kitchen utensils hanging from a tree. The Gadgets were originally a trio of Colin Lloyd Tucker, John Hyde and Matt Johnson (aka The The), though Johnson dropped out after the third LP 'The Blue Album' in 1983, in which he contributed none of his songs. The Gadgets records are out of print and there was some shenanigans involving CD reissues without the approval of Matt Johnson in the late '80s, though he recently released an 'official bootleg' which includes all of his original Gadgets compositions, an interview between himself and Colin Lloyd Tucker about their days working at De Wolfe studios, and some newly recorded material. Get it here.

5) INSPECTAH DECK - Elevation

From Deck's debut solo LP, 1999's 'Uncontrolled Substance'. The original long-delayed and highly anticipated LP was tragically lost as RZA's basement flooded, and the album that was due to come out in the first wave of classic Wu solo albums in '94-96 never came to be. Deck took matters into his own hands and produced much of the new record himself, but he had lost a lot of momentum in the public eye and his record sadly got lost in the shuffle of the post-'Wu-Tang Forever' slew of releases in the late '90s. Worth a rediscovery if you have not heard it. The beat was re-used for Ghostface Killah's 'Stay True' from his acclaimed 2000 album 'Supreme Clientele'.

6) SYD BARRETT - Love You

From Syd's debut album, 'The Madcap Laughs', released in 1970. The basic track was the fourth take, recorded on the 11th April 1969, with additional overdubs recorded on the 3rd May. Fascinating. The CD reissue includes outtakes, including the first and third takes of 'Love You'. Check out the informative official Syd Barrett website here.

Joe Cornish Jools Holland sample

Joe Cornish impersonates Jools Holland. Listen to the full clip here.

7) VAN DYKE PARKS - Palm Desert

This is the stereo mix of the track, which is from Parks' debut album 'Song Cycle' from 1967, fresh from working with Brian Wilson on the aborted 'SMiLE' album. It didn't do much at the time but went on to find a cult audience over the decades. I don't believe that this record is currently in print, and its last reissue was on Bella Union in 2012 on CD and vinyl. Check out VDP's quirky Instagram account here, and look out for shade he throws at Mike Love once in a while.

8) DAVID CROSBY - COWBOY MOVIE

From Crosby's debut solo LP, 1971's 'If I Could Only Remember My Name.....', which was sadly his only solo record for nearly 20 years. There was a nice 50th anniversary reissue with bonus demos and outtakes, including a longer take of this track, which isn't as good. RIP Croz.

9) SUPERBLACK! - White Privilege

Superblack! promised to be a radical, divisive and funky record from J-Zone (drums, vocals), Sacha Jenkins (bass) and Prince Paul (everything else, production) but it never came out. It was due to come out in 2016 on Mass Appeal records and from my understanding, it was finished. After an under-rehearsed performance at SXSW, J-Zone packed in the hip-hop and went on to become a highly-sought after session drummer. It's a long story and one that I will go into in-depth in the zine one day. Only this track was ever released on Soundcloud and was not widely heard - I hope the record comes out one day.

Tragically, Sacha Jenkins passed away a few days ago from complications from multiple system atrophy. He was best known as a journalist and documentarian, but as you can hear from this track he was a mean bassist. Rest In Peace.

Chatterbox FM sample

A snippet from Liberty City's talk radio station 'Chatterbox FM', prestened by Lazlow and as heard in the 2001 game Grand Theft Auto III. Listen to the whole station here.

10) YOKO ONO - Greenfield Morning I Pushed An Empty Baby Carriage All Over The City

From the 1970 album 'Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band', the 'companion' record to Lennon's solo debut. In print on CD and vinyl, check it out!

11) BECK - Lampshade

From the 1994 EP 'A Western Harvest Field By Moonlight', released only as a 10" - only 7000 total copies from four different pressings, the original pressings included original finger-paintings by Beck and friends. You can track down a used copy for about £30-40. Not too bad.

12) KIM DEAL - Disobedience

Kim Deal released her debut solo LP in 2024, 37 years since her first record with Pixies. Many of the songs are re-recordings from a series of solo 7"s released in 2013, and it is fantastic. She is still touring the record and I am looking forward to seeing the Roundhouse gig, as the one at the Barbican was amazing (and recorded! I hope that comes out soon). Get yr tix here.

13) LAKUNA - The Veil

From the only album by Lakuna, 1999's 'Castle Of Crime', released on 4AD. Lakuna was Throwing Muses drummer Dave Narcizo's project in the period when Throwing Muses had broken up in the late '90s, and along with Dave and Misi Narcizo, features appearances from Bernard Georges and Kristin Hersh from Throwing Muses, and Tom Gorman from Belly. It sounds nothing like those bands though. It received its first vinyl release in 2023 courtesy of now-defunct Seattle label Disc Drive, with newly designed artwork by Lakuna, Dave and Misi's design studio of the same name. Check out their work here.

Ed Miliband is Tuff Enuss sample

Hell yes. Watch the Paxman interview here.

14) MANIC STREET PREACHERS - Of Walking Abortion

From the 1994 album 'The Holy Bible', the last album with Richey Edwards as a participating member. It is a brutally dark album but it is great. I'm not a particularly big Manics fan outside of 3 or 4 albums to be honest, but The Holy Bible is one of my all-time favourite albums. A 2CD/1DVD reissue in 2004 unleashed the previously unreleased 'US Mix' of the album on the world and... it's not as good. Interesting to listen to once, though. Peace to Richey, wherever you are.

15) SPACEMEN 3 - I Believe It

From Spacemen 3's third album, 'Playing With Fire' from 1989. The 2001 CD reissue is worth tracking down as it has lots of bonus tracks, but it is out of print. I believe the album is still in print on vinyl, however.

16) HUMBLE PIE - Home And Away

From Humble Pie's second LP, 'Town And Country', which sunk without a trace on release due to label Immediate's incoming bankruptcy, though it's been reissued a bunch of times since on various labels. The 2007 CD reissue on Charly is the one to get, with 8 bonus tracks but typically it places the ugly Charly logo onto the sleeve.
