Here are some notes on the eighth Secret Sauces Radio show, which can be listened to on Mixcloud here...
SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT
Dawn Of The Dead Sample
From the legendary 1978 George A. Romero film, which exists in many cuts. A good 4-disc Blu-ray box set by Second Sight contains three cuts can be found here. Watch the trailer for Dawn Of The Dead here.
1) THE FLUID - Cold Outside
From the Denver, Colorado band's second album, 1988's 'Clear Black Paper', released on Sub Pop. This is the original mix found only on the original LP and cassette. A recent Jack Endino remixed reissue of this album and the rest of The Fluid's catalogue was released in 2024 on LP and digital only. Still no CD for The Fluid! Check out the catalogue on the Sub Pop website here.
2) REDD KROSS - Frosted Flake
Taken from Redd Kross' fourth release, the 1987 album 'Neurotica'. There was a nice reissue out on Merge for the 35th anniversary that included some bonus tracks and demos. Apparently, there are plans to remix the entire album (Tommy Erdelyi produced and mixed the original - like The Replacements' 'Tim', the results were divisive) after the multi tracks had been discovered so that may be one to look out for in 2027. In 2002, Redd Kross reissued Neurotica which, according to Discogs has 8 tracks remixed by Steve McDonald and Jon Auer but I don't own that edition and have never heard it. Get the Neurotica reissue and many other Redd Kross records at Merge here.
3) THE LAST - Snake In The Grass
From the Great Lost Album 'Look Again', The Last's 1980 would-be second LP. Issues with record labels and the original mix saw the record shelved and only poor-sounding acetates were produced in very limited quantities. The multi-track tapes were rediscovered and transferred by John Strother at Penguin Recording, LA, 40 years later and then mixed by Jonny Bell at Jazzcats Studio, Long Beach - during this process it was discovered that there were several tracks of performances not used in the original mix and as such, the 2020 mix of Look Again sounds fantastic. It was finally given an official wide release (LP + CD) on Backlash (The Last's original own label) with lots of great sleeve notes from Last members Joe Nolte and Vitus Mataré plus notes from Keith Morris, Jane Wiedlin, Bill Stevenson, Mike Watt, Darian Sahanaja and many more! It's a fantastic release and well worth tracking down!. Get it on Bandcamp here and check out the very informative official Last website run by Joe Nolte here.
4) MILITARIE GUN - Disposable Plastic Trash
From the band's third EP, 2021's 'All Roads Lead To The Gun II'. Digitally, both of those EPs have been compiled together with additional tracks. There were rumours that there would be a physical release of that but it is yet to surface. Fingers crossed. Visit the Militarie Gun Bandcamp page here to get the EP and other releases.
5) PHANTOM OPERA - Get The Funk Back
Phantom Opera were born out of the band Secret Hate, which was signed to New Alliance Records (Minutemen's label), and put out one mini-album in 1983. Phantom Opera were signed to New Alliance and put out an eponymous EP in 1986, and then released their only LP 'Lives Of Violence' in 1988. By then, New Alliance was under the ownership of SST Records. This track is from that record, which is long out-of-print and only available on LP and cassette.
6) 100 FLOWERS - Triage
From the 1984 mini-LP 'Drawing Fire', released on the band's own Happy Squid Records. Most of 100 Flowers' output was compiled on the '100 Years Of Pulchritude' CD released by Rhino Records in 1990, and in 2020 In The Red Records released an expanded version of the Drawing Fire record for Record Store Day. Get more 100 Flowers on Bandcamp here.

People Place Sample
A clip from one of the masterful 'People Place' parody sections of The Adam & Joe Show where 'Lindsay Munk' asks what's in the basket of a pissed up man in a supermarket in Woolwich. Classic.
Watch all the People Place clips compiled together here in VHS quality. You can watch the entire series on WOW Presents Plus here, or search around for the out-of-print Adam And Joe DVD which doesn't include the whole series but includes some other good bits.
7) ROYAL TRUX - 10 Days 12 Nights
From Royal Trux's 1997 sixth LP 'Sweet Sixteen', their final release for Virgin Records who were supposedly so upset with the album that they paid Neil and Jennifer $30k to leave! The artwork is made to look like a shit/vomit filled toilet with RTX cake icing on top, so you can understand the upset in some regard but it is a great record so fuck 'em. It is the only Royal Trux album not to be released on vinyl, so hopefully it will see a release at some point. Fire Records have recently been reissuing the early records on vinyl but nothing past 1993's 'Cats And Dogs', so we will see. Wouldn't you just love the 'Sweet Sixteen' artwork blown up to 12"x12" dimensions? Check out Royal Trux Chronicles on Instagram who regularly posts rare stuff like flyers and live recordings.
8) BAND OF SUSANS - Hard Light
From the NYC band's 1989 second LP, 'Love Agenda'. For this album and tour, Page Hamilton (later leader of Helmet) played guitar and sang on some tracks. It's a great LP and could very much do with a remaster. Lots of Band Of Susans rarities not found on physical releases can be found on Robert Poss' Bandcamp here.
9) DUB SEX - Kicking The Corpse Around
Dub Sex never released a full-length LP but released several EPs and the mini-album 'Push!' between 1987-1989. This track is from 'Push!' which has a sleeve of The Fall's Simon Wolstencroft running away from a car. The vast majority of Dub Sex's work was compiled on the 'Search For The Right Words' CD compilation released by Optic Nerve in 2019 which is well worth getting. Mark Hoyle of Dub Sex recently released his memoir, 'Swerve' which can be bought at Route (along with Simon Wolstencroft's book and many other gems).
10) X - I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts
The centrepiece of X's fourth LP, 1983's 'More Fun In The New World'. Lots of great lines in these lyrics. This was the fourth and final X album to be produced by The Doors' Ray Manzarek. Like those other three albums, Fat Possum is keeping it in print on CD and vinyl (no bonus tracks on the CDs though, you'll want to track down the old Rhino reissues for those and liner notes). I would recommend tracking down an original pressing of 'More Fun In The New World' on vinyl though, as Fat Possum's reissue does not have the original back sleeve - it is the front sleeve on both sides for some reason. Unfortunately, X has all but disowned the next three albums despite their quality so you'll have to search around for those. The final two albums, released on Fat Possum, are well worth checking out though. See what's in print here.

Man Getting Arrested Singing Pearl Jam Sample
As above, this guy belts out Even Flow by Pearl Jam while getting cuffed. I have no idea what cop show this is from but I would love to watch it all. This is a classic moment though.
11) FRONT 242 - GVDT
From Front 242's debut album, 1981's Geography. This was a couple of years before they pioneered their Electronic Body Music sound, but this LP is great. Alfa Matrix put out a great box set of Geography with lots of bonus music and ephemera, and matching sets for 1984's 'No Comment' and a new condensed version of 2003's 'Pulse' - the die cut box lids spell out '242' when placed side by side. Other Front 242 material is available through Alfa Matrix, but lots of their classic 80s/90s material is out of print, presumably due to licensing issues with whoever owns those records. See what's available here.
12) J-LIVE - Wax Paper
This is from J-Live's debut LP, 'The Best Part' which was released in 2001 but completed in 1999 - it sat on the shelf due to record label bullshit shenanigans. This track was produced by Prince Paul and was itstrumentally repurposed for his 2005 'Itstrumental' album for the track 'Gangsta's My Style', like many of its other tracks.
Check out J-Live's Bandcamp store here, where you can purchase signed LPs, CDs and cassettes of his records including this one.
13) MR. DEAD FEAT. BIG PAT & METALLICA - Third Degree Burn
Not that Metallica - it is the WordSound recording artist better known as Mentol Nomad, aka Mentallica. This track is from Mr. Dead's debut solo album, 'Metabolics Volume II: Dawn Of The Dead', released on WordSound in 2000. It also appears on the soundtrack to the 2002 Skiz Fernando film 'Crooked' (Movie and Soundtrack CD/DVD & original score CD available on WordSound), which Mr. Dead makes an appearance in.
Mr. Dead was previously one half of hip hop duo Metabolics with Big Pat who features on this track. My guess is that this track (and a few others on this record with Big Pat) were recorded for a second Metabolics LP but put on Dead's solo record after they parted ways - I don't know for sure though. Either way, the two Mr. Dead records and the Metabolics album are well worth checking out and rumblings of new material from Mr. Dead. Exciting stuff.
RIP Big Pat.
14) JAH WOBBLE'S INVADERS OF THE HEART - No Change Is Sexy
From the 1994 album 'Take Me To God'. Lots of guest vocalists appear on this record but this track is Wobble himself - it could only be Wobble.
At the height of the CD era, this album only received a numbered limited release (with a shit black cover) and has never been reissued on the format. If you have a copy of the CD you will know that it is screaming out for a fold-out artwork reissue. Oh well. Cherry Red did a 2 CD reissue in 2011 with a random assortment of bonus tracks that aren't necessarily related to the album itself. Worth tracking down but it is out of print and creeping up in price.
Wobble is still regularly releasing new music and touring, and recently reprinted his fantastic 'Memoirs of a Geezer' - highly recommended. Keep up to date with all things Wobble here and be sure to follow him on Instagram here - you never know, he might bust out the Autoglass jingle again.

Sir Patrick Stewart vs James Corden Sample
If James Corden wasn't so awful, you would not be celebrating the bizarre antics of Sir Patrick Stewart attacking him and his belly out of nowhere at the 2010 Glamour Awards. However, he is awful and PatStew called it before most. Enjoy the full clip here. And enjoy Limmy rage-watching all things James Corden here.
15) GANG OF FOUR - Armalite Rifle
Originally the b-side to 'Damaged Goods' in 1978, this track was compiled with other b-sides as the U.S. 1980 eponymous 'yellow EP' by Gang Of Four, which has since been appended to most reissues of their 1979 debut LP 'Entertainment!'. It also appeared on the '77-81' box set on CD and vinyl but that went out of print very quickly and is very very expensive to buy now. Gang Of Four are currently on their 'Long Goodbye' farewell tour and are in the middle of the U.S. leg at the moment - they are coming to the UK and Europe next month. Looking forward to the London show. Get yr tix ere.
16) TAD - Leper
From the 1993 'Salem' EP which was released on Sub Pop just before they signed to Giant and released 'Inhaler'. For some reason, this EP was not included in the TAD Sub Pop reissue campaign from 2016. You'll have to track down an original pressing CD/12"/7" for it - it has fantastic artwork.
17) ROOTS MANUVA - Soul Decay
From the debut Roots Manuva LP 'Brand New Second Hand', released on Big Dada in 1999. It was recently reissued on vinyl (get it here) and is easy to find used on CD. Roots Manuva has been releasing new tracks recently, which you can buy on his website here.
18) NO MAN - No Warning
'No Man is Roger Milller' (ex-Mission of Burma). This is from No Man's 1990 fourth LP 'How The West Was Won', released on SST Records. It's long out-of-print and I think this album may be in SST-rights limbo (as usual) but some of those SST albums, along with other Roger Miller music can be found at his Bandcamp page here.
