SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT
The Man Who Fell To Earth Sample
The scene where Mary-Lou (Candy Clark) sees Thomas Jerome Newton (David Bowie) in his true alien form for the first time and loses her shit, as you would. There was a nice Blu-ray box set of this Nicolas Roeg classic released in 2016 with four discs, booklets, postcards and posters etc. which is worth tracking down. Watch the trailer here.
1) J DILLA - DD.021
An untitled and undated J Dilla Beat from the vaults which was first released on the 24 track digital posthumous beat comp 'J Dilla's Delights'. That was then split into two 12 track releases and released on vinyl as 'Volume 1' and 'Volume 2' - this beat appears on Volume 2 on vinyl.
2) BEASTIE BOYS - And What You Give Is What You Get
This Dust Brothers instrumental mix of the 'Paul's Boutique' track 'Shadrach' comes from the 1989 12" EP 'An Exciting Evening At Home With Shadrach, Meshach And Abednego'. It only ever received a CD release as a promo, and like the Love American Style EP is full of similarly great mixes of 'Paul's Boutique' tracks. Both are now available officially in digital form but have not received physical reissues, perhaps due to the insane amount of samples that may or may not have been cleared. Of course, the title comes from the sample from The Jam's 'Start!', sung at the end by Paul Weller...
3) PAUL WELLER - Science With The Psychonauts (A Lynch Mob Remix)
Paul Weller's period working with Brendan Lynch not only saw his first five (great) solo albums, but a handful of brilliant 'Lynch Mob' remixes and dubs come out on b-sides. This remix of Science from the 1997 Heavy Soul Album was done with The Psychonauts (featuring Pablo Clement who was also a member of UNKLE) and first appeared as a b-side to the 1998 reissue of 'Wild Wood' which came out to promote the 'Modern Classics' greatest hits album. It later appeared on the 2003 b-sides and covers set 'Fly On The Wall' which was recently reissued on vinyl. Lynch did many other excellent mixes for other artists including Primal Scream and Massive Attack which are all worth tracking down. It'd be nice to have a Lynch Mob Beats compilation with all those remixes collected up.
Brendan Lynch is still active working as a producer and composer out of his own Le Mob studios. Check out the Le Mob site here.
4) THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY FEAT. DE LA SOUL - I Don't Care
'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' are Prince Paul, Dan The Automator and The Dust Brothers and was set to be an album made by the legendary producers with a star-studded lineup (rumoured to include Beck, The RZA, Folk Implosion and Björk), released by DreamWorks in 1997. With conflicting schedules, the album didn't materialise, yet Prince Paul and Dan The Automator came out with Handsome Boy Modeling School in 1999 which is essentially the same concept without the Dust Brothers, through a handsome filter.
The 1998 Eels album 'Electro-Shock Blues' features the song 'My Descent Into Madness which credits The Good, The Bad & The Ugly for songwriting and production, but is supposedly more of a Mike Simpson production - a couple of other tracks on that album are credited solely to E & Simpson.
This track featuring De La Soul is the only other track released from these sessions, as part of Prince Paul's 'The Redux', a re-imagining of his 2003 album 'Politics Of The Business', which you can get for free on Bandcamp here.
To read more about The Good, The Bad & The Ugly read this piece by Gino Sorcinelli on Medium. Hopefully one day we will hear more of those tracks.
5) RUN-D.M.C. - Beats To The Rhyme
From the fourth Run-D.M.C. album 'Tougher Than Leather', which had a tie-in film. The album is much better than the film. There was a nice deluxe edition on CD that came out in 2005 with some bonus tracks and liner notes, worth tracking down.

Performance sample
A sample from another Nic Roeg film, 1970's 'Performance' starring Mick Jagger and Mick Jagger and James Fox and James Fox. Watch the trailer here. This film was sampled all throughout a song which lyrically references Roeg's filmography, 'E=MC2' by Big Audio Dynamite...
6) BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE - 2000 Shoes (Top Buzz)
Most of the b-sides and remixes from Big Audio Dynamite are unavailable digitally or on CD unfortunately. You will have to track down the 12" promo 'Lovesensi' (the title and artwork is a parody of Prince's 'Lovesexy') for this great remix of the track 2000 Shoes - original version found on 1988's 'Tighten Up Vol. 88'. However... the majority of the copies of this limited 12" contain the A-Side 'BAD Overture' on both sides, so you'll have to play both sides to make sure you have one with this remix on it. Fun.
7) PRIMAL SCREAM - Blood Money
Taken from the final full-length release on Creation Records, Primal Scream's sixth album 'XTRMNTR'. This track was co-produced by David Holmes, but other tracks on the album were produced and mixed by Brendan Lynch and Dan The Automator!
8) GARY USHER - Sacramento
Gary Usher worked with many notable '60s Californian acts, and co-wrote many early Beach Boys songs with Brian Wilson. He had a brief recording career that saw little success, which included this a-side, produced by Brian Wilson. In 1970, he recorded a symphonic tribute to Brian which went unreleased until 2001, which is worth tracking down.
The 2003 compilation on Ace Records 'Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions' collects this song and many others by The Honeys, The Survivors, Sharon Marie, Spring, Laughing Gravy, The Revolvers and other artists that you've likely not heard of before unless you're a Beach Boys nut. Unfortunately, Brian Wilson's productions saw little success outside of The Beach Boys despite their quality.

Martin Brunt Sky News sample
A classic 2016 clip of Sky News' Martin Brunt channeling Brass Eye and The Day Today, walking out of a church in Weybridge in the wake of a French terrorist attack and saying "There are about a dozen worshippers in there and one priest. If I was a terrorist, I could have killed them all."
9) VIOLENT FEMMES - Ugly
A non-album single released in between the first two Violent Femmes albums, this song and its b-side 'Gimme The Car' have appeared on almost every CD pressing of the debut album, which was recently reissued for its 40th anniversary by Craft recordings. It would be nice to see other Violent Femmes albums receive similar treatment, particularly 'Hallowed Ground'.
10) GARY NUMAN - Remind Me To Smile
This is is taken from the 1998 CD reissue of the 'Telekon' album, Gary Numan's fourth (including the two Tubeway Army records) studio LP from 1980. Apparently this track has an alternate intro on this reissue, but I can tell no difference between this and my original 1980 LP. I trust the Numanoids more than myself, so I will take their word for it.
11) SUPER FURRY ANIMALS - Wherever I Lay My Phone (That's My Home)
For Super Furry Animals' third LP, 1999's 'Guerrilla', they produced it themselves, which is perhaps why this song is so batshit. But I love it and I love the album. A great reissue came out in 2019 with so much bonus material that it couldn't all fit on the 2 CDs, so if you want all the tracks, there are even more to hear on the digital version. Kliph Scurlock has been putting together the SFA reissues and has been doing a fantastic job. Hopefully the Love Kraft reissue will be out later this year.
12) M.I.A. - Born Free
Before M.I.A. married a billionaire and went all anti-vax and anti-5G and started selling wi-fi repellant clothing. Ah well.
I remember how shocking the music video was for this song when it came out, showing a brutal and realistic genocide being committed against white ginger people. It's still a powerful watch today... especially today. Check it out here.

Peter Cook Through The Keyhole sample
There was a weird 80s/90s TV show which saw weird Loyd Grossman snoop through people's houses, 'Through The Keyhole'. The bloke that has the sauces in supermarkets and was also guitarist of punk one-record wonders 'Jet Bronx & The Forbidden'.
In this clip, Peter Cook snoops through Loyd's house on TV-am taking the piss out of Grossman's weird accent. A strange watch, check it out here.
13) WESLEY WILLIS - You Better Find My Pistol
This track is from Wesley Willis & The Dragnews' 1998 album 'SMD Promotions', released on Fuse Records. It's not the easiest Wesley Willis album to find - certainly harder to get than any that came out on Alternative Tentacles or American Recordings, but a lot easier and cheaper than those that Wesley self-released and sold on the streets of Chicago.
14) MADONNA - Angel
From Madonna's second album 'Like A Virgin' released in 1984. The 2001 CD reissue has a couple of extended dance remixes as bonus tracks and is still the best reissue out there, as an announced Madonna reissue campaign of deluxe editions is still yet to materialise.
15) FIENDS - Hold Me When I'm Naked
Taken from the second and final album by Los Angeles art-punkers the Fiends, 1986's 'Gynecölögy' - produced by John Doe of X. The main female vocal on this track is Candye Kane and the other female voice is Donita Sparks of L7, before they had released any records. She can also be spotted on the front cover of the album next to Scott Morrow's (RIP) leg. L7 would later cover Fiends' 'Packin' A Rod' (from their first album, 1984's 'We've Come For Your Beer') on their 1990 EP/LP 'Smell The Magic', with Sparks on vocals. Both Fiends albums have never been reissued or have seen a CD release.
16) TANYA DONELLY - Swoon
The closing track Tanya Donelly's 1997 debut solo album 'Lovesongs For Underdogs'. With plenty of b-sides and circulating demos, it would be nice to have a deluxe reissue of this record come out please, 4AD. Thank you.
You can find Tanya Donelly on Bandcamp here and find lots of music not physically available, including the excellent 'Big Love Bends Time' EP and early demos for Belly's 'Star' album when it was intended to be the second Breeders album (with guest guitar from Kim Deal) - check it out!
