Here are some notes on the sixth Secret Sauces Radio show, which can be listened to on Mixcloud here...

SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT

Night Of The Living Dead sample

Legendary scene from George A. Romero's 'Night Of The Living Dead' - the original 1968 black and white one. This film is now in the public domain, so you can watch it for free online here but it is worth checking out the 2024 4K Blu-ray release as part of The Criterion Collection.

1) HELMET - In The Meantime

The opening track to the classic 1992 album 'Meantime'. While the rest of the album was engineered by Wharton Tiers, who had engineered their debut LP 'Strap It On' (and many other classic records), this track was recorded by Steve Albini. Perhaps due to 'Meantime' being their major label debut (Interscope), the album was handed over to Andy Wallace for mixing, fresh off the success of mixing Nirvana's 'Nevermind'. Apparently, Albini was so furious that Wallace had remixed his work on this song, that he had it worked into his future contract for recording Nirvana's 'In Utero' the following year that his recordings were not to be remixed by Andy Wallace. That never happened but unfortunately the tracks that were singles were remixed by Scott Litt.

An original Albini mix of 'In The Meantime' has never been released officially and has not surfaced on any bootlegs to my knowledge, but there are two Albini recordings out there in bootleg form: 'Turned Out' and 'Rock Messiah'. Check them out here.

2) SHELLAC - Billiard Player Song

Side B from the debut release of Steve Albini's band Shellac, the 1993 7" EP 'The Rude Gesture: A Pictorial History'. There are no Shellac compilations or deluxe editions to compile the many non-album 7" releases, so you can only get this track on the original single (not been reissued since 1993). A live recording can be found on 1994's CD 'ライヴイン東京', a live Japanese release credited to 'シェラック'. Another live recording can be found on 1995's 'Billardspielerlied' 7", a live German release credited to 'Schellack'. Fun.

3) COCTEAU TWINS - In Our Angelhood

From their second LP, 1983's 'Head Over Heels'. This was the final album they released before bassist Simon Raymonde joined the band.

Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde of the band started Bella Union label in 1997, though since 2000 it has been under Raymonde's control. Bella Union has its own record shop now, a nice reversal of the Beggars Banquet story from shop to label (though Bella Union is still a label, and is bigger than ever). In fact, Simon Raymonde worked at the Beggars Banquet shop in South Kensington in the early '80s and that's how he met Cocteau Twins.

Anyway, that seemingly pointless discursion leads to me saying - if you order Cocteau Twins records (the ones that Simon Raymonde played on) from the Bella Union record shop, they will come signed by the man himself. If you care about that sort of thing, get 'em here.

4) DJ KRUSH - Kemuri

This classic track from DJ Krush can be found on his second LP 'Strictly Turntablized', released on Mo' Wax in 1994 in a beautiful Futura sleeve, and reissued by Mo'Wax in 1994 with that beautiful Futura sleeve minituarised on a sticker. Avoid that one. Like most of the Mo'Wax catalogue, it is out of print and much deserving of a reissue.

DJ Krush still plays here in the UK sometimes (8th August 2025 is his next UK date at the Houghton Festival), check out his website here to see what he's up to and get tickets.

Maps To The Stars sample

From the 2014 David Cronenberg film 'Maps To The Stars', adapted from the novel 'Dead Stars' written by Bruce Wagner - the first Cronenberg film to be (partially) shot in the United States. Straight after this sampled dialogue, the humiliated assistant (Mia Wasikowska) bludgeons the actress (Julianne Moore) to death with one of her awards. Nice. Watch the trailer here.

5) RED SNAPPER - 4 Dead Monks (Original Demo)

This is from a Warp records compilation entitled 'We Are Reasonable People' from 1998, which is out of print but can be picked up used easily enough on CD and vinyl. This is the demo of '4 Dead Monks', and the final version can be found on Red Snapper's 1998 LP 'Making Bones', which is also out of print but can be picked up used easily enough on CD and vinyl. Check out Red Snapper's site here and their Bandcamp here.

6) © - N1 Ear

© is Leslie Winer, and this track appears on her 1993 debut LP 'Witch', which has been reissused a few times on CD and LP, most recently by Superior Viaduct in 2014. There's lots of great musicians playing on that record, including Jah Wobble. There have been various Leslie Winer releases since then, new and archival, but a good place to start for the unfamiliar may be the 2021 compilation 'When I Hit You - You'll Feel It' from 2021, released by Light In The Attic records. Check it out here.

Leslie Winer has a fascinating history, including co-writing and performing on Sinéad O'Connor's 'Just Call Me Joe' (as heard on Secret Sauces Radio 004) - read more about her on Wikipedia here.

7) THE UPSETTERS - Soul Man

Taken from the 1973 album 'Double Seven' by The Upsetters, with Lee Perry. This is a fun cover of an Isaac Hayes tune, first made famous by duo Sam & Dave in 1967.

The 'Double Seven' album has been reissued a few times on vinyl in recent years, and can be found on CD as part of the 2017 2CD set 'Lee 'Scratch' Perry & The Upsetters: The Trojan Albums Collection (1971-1973) along with the albums 'Africa's Blood', 'Battle Axe' and 'Rhythm Shower'.

I think it is a shame that a lot of Perry's work is bundled cheaply with other albums on CD and not given the dignity of its own release. 'Double Seven' is a great album, and deserves its own release on CD. Thank you and goodnight.

8) BROOKZILL! - S. Bento MC5 (Feat. Thaide, Xis, Espião & Rodrigo Ogi)

Brookzill! was a great, interesting and different project as one would expect from Prince Paul. With long-term friend and regular collaborator Don Newkirk, Digable Planets emcee Ladybug Mecca, and Brazilian rapper Rodrigo Brandão (and plenty of guests), the sole Brookzill! album, 2016's 'Throwback To The Future' (released on Tommy Boy) saw hip hop bridging the gap between Brooklyn and Brazil - hence the name. Ladybug Mecca and Brandão rhyming in Portugese on top of PP beats and Newkirk keys - what more could you want?! Very much worth your time.

Don Newkirk sadly passed away suddenly in November 2022 at the age of 55. As well as showcasing a great sense of humour in his projects, his recorded history is seriously impressive, from his solo releases and groups he was a part of, to countless credits on great records by other artists. In his final months, Newkirk had begun a YouTube channel which is nice viewing - watch his videos here. Check his stuff out if you are unfamiliar - here are (some) credits on Discogs.

Curb Your Enthusiasm sample

A classic clip of Larry telling a young Sammy Green to shut the fuck up several times, as seen in Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 7 Episode 4, 'The Hot Towel', which first aired on 11th October 2009. Watch the clip here.

9) LAST NIGHT WE KILLED PINEAPPLE - Plus Seul

In 2023, when I was working behind the counter in a record shop in Edinburgh, three French guys walked in and purchased CD copies of the recent Ride remasters, 'Nowhere', 'Going Blank Again' and '4 EPs' - one each. It turned out that they were in a band - they told me they were playing Whistle Binkies that night and they handed me a CD to play or sell in the shop. Unfortunately I was doing something that night and couldn't go to the gig, but I played the CD in the shop, liked it, and kept it. Sorry guys.

This track is from their 2022 EP 'Multicolor' - they have a few other releases you can buy on their Bandcamp page here, and their YouTube channel is here.

10) THE EMOTIONS - If You Think It (You May As Well Do It)

This track can be found on the 1972 album 'Untouched' released by Volt, a Stax subsidiary label. Like many classic R&B and soul records, singles were the main attraction and the albums were somewhat thrown together from the singles and b-sides, despite often being great, cohesive listens. Then, with catalogue releases becoming huge in the 90s, instead of reissuing the studio albums, labels released endless 'hits' and 'best of' compilations. If you want the Untouched album, you'll have to track down an original pressing on vinyl, or limited Japanese-only CD reissues. You will find this track on almost every Emotions compilation though.

Wu Tang Clan fans will undoubtedly recognise the intro to this song from Raekwon (feat. Nas)'s 'Verbal Intercourse', from the classic 'purple tape' aka 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...' album from 1995. For compilations collecting up many of the R&B/soul tunes the RZA sampled on those early Wu tracks, check out the 'Shaolin Soul' series on CD and vinyl. This track appears on Volume 1, released in 1998.

12) ASSOCIATES - 18 Carat Love Affair

The classic Associates album 'Sulk' from 1982 features the instrumental closing track 'nothinginsomethingparticular', which was re-worked into this track for a double A-side release a couple of months later, with a cover of Diana Ross' 'Love Hangover' on the flip. You will find this track and other associated (heh) b-sides and non-album tracks on most CD releases of Sulk, most recently reissued as a 1LP+2CD+Cassette deluxe edition in 2022.

13) STARTLED INSECTS - Fish

This track is taken from Startled Insects' second LP, 'Lifepulse', the 1991 soundtrack album (released on LP, CD and cassette) to the BBC nature documentary 'Lifepulse - A Natural Thriller', which was released on VHS and can be viewed on the Internet Archive here.

The Bristol trio soon became a duo after this record and renamed themselves 'The Insects', going on to a long, ongoing career in soundtracking and production. Fans of fellow Bristolians Massive Attack will recognise the Lifepulse track 'Cheetah' as the basis of their track 'Eurochild' from the 1994 Protection album. Startled Insects also co-wrote 'Karmacoma' from the same album. Here is their website.

Quiet Please sample

A sample from a nine minute documentary 'Quiet Please' made in 2000 by student Luke Howard, which covers the arrival of Luton's huge Galaxy Centre with its multiplex Cineworld cinema inside, and the impact of the ABC Cinema around the corner on George Street. The ABC closed down later that year in 2000 and has remained derelict since, it's a lovely art deco building that may have been 'reinvigorated with art' in the past few months - I don't know, I haven't been there in quite a few years.

Either way, this short student film is both sad and hilarious, and the assistant manager of the ABC is great to watch in a David Brent kind of way. In this clip, he is confident that despite having a bigger selection of ice creams, the 'customer service just isn't there' at the Cineworld. I wish it was a series. Check it out here.

14) BUZZ HUNGRY - Anyone

Former Mercyland frontman David Barbe joined Bob Mould's Sugar in 1992, and would sing the odd song live and on record. One you may be familiar with is 'Anyone', which came out as a live recording to the b-side to 'If I Can't Change Your Mind' (listen to Sugar playing it here) and subsequently as part of the entire Chicago Metro show released as part of the Copper Blue reissue on Edsel. This track would be recorded and released by Barbe's new band Buzz Hungry on the 1994 album 'Fried Like A Man', released on CD and LP. You'll also find 'The Beer Commercial' and 'Where Diamonds Are Halos', which were recorded live or in BBC sessions by Sugar too.

Check out David Barbe's solo releases on Bandcamp here, and Mercyland reissues on Propeller Sound Recordings here. Buzz Hungry would release another album in 1995 entitled 'At The Hands Of Our Intercessors' which was released on CD and LP, but is out of print like the debut LP.

15) KRISTIN HERSH - Dandelion

From Kristin Hersh's excellent eleventh studio LP 'Clear Pond Road', released on Fire Records in 2023. There was also a companion record released for Record Store Day in 2024 called 'Clear Pond Road Sessions' which featured Hersh and cellist Pete Harvey (aka Cello Pete), who toured with her at the time of the record's release. He also plays on the new Throwing Muses album 'Moonlight Concessions' - maybe he will be touring with them too on their upcoming tour? Buy a ticket and find out!

For gig tickets and to support Kristin's music by becoming a Strange Angel, go here. To buy the new records, go here.

16) SONIC YOUTH - Sweet Emotion

Enjoy this burst of noise courtesy of Sonic Youth to fill a minute-or-so of time to get to the 60 minute mark of this mix. This track was released as one of five 7" singles in a limited box set commemorating the 5th Terrastock festival in October 2002. This track, and its b-side 'Lord Of Your Thighs' are not Aerosmith covers as the titles suggest. They have since been collected as part of the digital-only release 'Rarities 3' in 2020 - get it on Bandcamp here.

17) PUBLIC IMAGE LTD. - No Birds

From the mighty Metal Box, PiL's second LP released in 1979. A nice (metal) box set of Metal Box was released in 2016 with outtakes and all that which was very good but it is long out of print. I can't stand Lydon these days but I won't deny how great early PiL is, especially when Jah Wobble and Keith Levene were in the group.

18) MADNESS - The Opium Eaters

This instrumental track is taken from the third Madness LP 1981's LP '7'.

There was a nice 2xCD deluxe reissue of this album released in 2010 as part of a series of reissues with numbered spines and letters spelling out 'MADNESS!' if you got them all - they didn't finish it. My shelf says 'MADNE!' and it annoys me every time I see it. The 'Mad Not Mad' reissue went out of print very quickly and reaches extortionate prices, and the reissue of 'The Madness' never came out. In 2023, they reissued the reissue in different packaging without the spine shenanigans. None of that is relevant, but I needed to get it off my chest. Thank you.
