Here are some notes on the fifth Secret Sauces Radio show, which can be listened to on Mixcloud here...

SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT

The Brood sample

A clip from the 1979 David Cronenberg film 'The Brood' which has lots of fucked-up looking demonic children in it. Great film. Watch the trailer here.

1) NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - Sedan Delivery

Taken from the second 'electric' side of Neil Young & Crazy Horse's live/studio LP 'Rust Never Sleeps' from 1979. According to the Neil Young Archives, this track was recorded at the St Paul Civic Center, Minnesota on the 15th October 1978. It is a different recording than on the 'Live Rust' album comprised of various dates on the tour, which was recorded at The Cow Palace in San Francisco on the 22nd October 1978 - the film 'Rust Never Sleeps' is all from this show.

An earlier, slower studio version of Sedan Delivery was recorded on the 22nd May 1975 during the 'Zuma' sessions - it is this recording that can be found on the 1977 album 'Chrome Dreams' that went officially unreleased until 2023.

2) D.C. 3 - I Believe It

This is the second track from D.C. 3's debut album 'This Is The Dream', released on SST Records in 1985. It was released on LP and cassette, and has never seen a CD/digital release or remastered reissue (like much of SST's catalogue). The D.C. stands for Dez Cadena, ex-(third) vocalist/guitarist for Black Flag, who formed this band with Paul Roessler )(brother of Kira, Black Flag bassist) after leaving Black Flag in 1983. This song is a re-write of a Dez-written tune found on the legendary 1982 demos entitled 'What Can You Believe'. The other Dez tune on those demos that never saw a re-recording by Black Flag, 'Yes I Know' was also re-written and recorded by D.C. 3 on this album under the title 'Ain't No Time Here Now'.

D.C. 3 released three further albums on SST: 'The Good Hex' (1986), 'You're Only As Blind As Your Mind Can Be' (1986) and 'Vida' (1989). Only 'Vida' was ever available on CD.

3) BIG BLACK - In My House

Excuse the poor quality for this one. Big Black's cover of Rick James protégées, the Mary Jane Girls' 1985 single was only ever released on a 5" vinyl (yes, you read that right) either with the Pigpile VHS or as part of the Pigpile box set that also included the LP, VHS, T-shirt and poster. There was also a 7" test pressing (I do not own a copy but from pictures, it looks like it is a test pressing of the 5" on a 7" disc - lots of empty space) , but it is extremely rare and expensive. A fun cover, regardless. RIP Steve Albini.

4) TWIGY - 椰子

From ex-Microphone Pager rapper Twigy's nineteen-ninety mothafuckin' siiiiix EP '聖戦', released on Vortex Records. The whole EP is great and worth checking out, but particularly this track and '聖戦 (Part II)' which were produced by Prince Paul. Released on CD and 12", the 12" includes two tracks not on the CD, the instrumental version of '椰子', and an acapella version of '聖戦 (Part I)'. Twigy is still an active emcee and has released several albums and EPs since this one, on a variety of labels. Microphone Pager reunited in the 2000s and released a couple of records in 2009 - I don't know if they are still active.

Sexy Beast sample

A clip of Ben Kingsley as ̶M̶a̶h̶a̶t̶m̶a̶ ̶G̶a̶n̶d̶h̶i̶ Don Logan in Jonathan Glazer's 2000 directorial debut 'Sexy Beast'. The score was done by UNKLE and South. Watch the trailer for 'Sexy Beast' here.

5) ELASTICA - All For Gloria (John Peel Session, 06/12/1994)

This Peel Session was recorded on 6th December 1994 and first broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on 17th December 1994. It was then released as the b-side to 'Waking Up' on 13th February 1995. On 28th March 1995, Elastica recorded this song, title now shortened to 'Gloria' for a Mark Radcliffe session - this has never been officially released. A setlist regular throughout the extensive touring in 1995, a live version from Tokyo on the 11th July 1995 was released as a b-side on the Australian-only CD single for 'Car Song' in January 1996.

Anyway, this song has never had an official studio version released, but of the three versions out there that I know of, this 1994 Peel Sesh is the best, I think. Elastica are unlikely to ever reunite but have been known to reissue their debut album a few times on vinyl. Hopefully they will do a CD reissue with all the b-sides, and maybe even a studio version of 'Gloria'... if one was ever recorded.

6) RIDE - Drive Blind

First released on Ride's eponymous debut EP, this was later compiled on the U.S. 'Smile' compilation which pairs both the Ride and Play EPs. All of those records were released in 1990. The 'Smile' compilation is now redundant after the release of the '4 EPs' compilation from 2022, released on CD and 2xLP by Wichita Recordings, alongside reissues of the band's Creation-era records. Ride have been active in touring and releasing new records since their reformation in 2014 - check their website here to see what they're up to.

7) MR. PARTRIDGE - Steam Fist Futurist

Mr. Partridge is Andy Partridge of XTC, and the album that this is taken from is 'Take Away/The Lure Of Salvage', released on Virgin Records in 1980. This album sees Mr. Partridge and John Leckie deconstructing XTC records in a post-punk dubwise fashion, similarly to the 'Go +' 12" EP bundled with initial pressings of XTC's second album 'Go 2' in 1978. In fact, this album helpfully says on the back sleeve, "if you liked Go +' then this record weighs approximately the same amount', as well as informing you that "this used to be some XTC records. It is now a collection of tracks that have been electronically processed/shattered and layered with other sounds or lyrical pieces".

It does not tell you which songs they used to be, but if you are familiar with XTC's material pre-1980 you should be able to tell. It is mostly derived from 1979's 'Drums And Wires' album. I can tell you that this is a mangled version of the song 'Reel By Real'. I thoroughly recommend this album - it is long out of print but worth tracking down. It was compiled with 'Go +' on CD in 1990 as the compilation 'Explode Together: The Dub Experiments 78-80'. Mr. Partridge has not re-issued this album on APE House yet, but Go + was recently reissued on vinyl with 'Go 2', so you never know...

If you check out 'Explode Together' and like XTC's crazy take on dub music, also check out the 'Coat Of Many Cupboards' compilation from 2002 which includes 'Fireball XL5/Fireball Dub' from the 'White Music' sessions in 1978, the 2017 CD/Blu-ray reissue of 'Black Sea' that includes 3 unreleased demo dub versions of Black Sea tunes (perhaps there was a planned follow up to 'Take Away'?), and 'Cocktail Dance Mixture', an odd remix of 'Down In The Cockpit' reminiscent of the dub experiments - this can be found as a 12" b-side to 'Ball And Chain' and on CD on the out of print 'Rag & Bone Buffet' compilation.

8) SHABAZZ PALACES - Are You... Can You... Were You? (Felt)

This is taken from the excellent 2011 debut album from Shabazz Palaces, 'Black Up', released on Sub Pop. Shabazz Palaces are led by Palaceer Lazaro (aka Ishmael Butler, aka Butterfly of Digable Planets). They have been prolific in releasing mind-bending hip hop in recent years on Sub Pop - all of their records are well worth your time, as is the 2018 '1 Time Mirage' album by Knife Knights, another Butler project on Sub Pop. Ishmael Butler joined Sub Pop's A&R team in 2013.

SECRET SAUCES RADIO IDENT

Derek And Clive - Hello Colin

This is taken from Derek And Clive's second LP, 'Derek And Clive Come Again', released in 1977. Derek And Clive are of course Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

9) SLOVENLY - Movement

The opening track from Slovenly's 1986 album 'Thinking Of Empire'. This was their debut release for SST Records, though they had released an LP and a couple of singles on New Alliance beforehand (when it was under the ownership of Minutemen, before SST bought it). Sadly, this classic album has never been reissued and was only available on vinyl and cassette. All of Slovenly's catalogue is out of print, but their final three albums were released on CD too.

10) FLOAT UP CP - The Loneliest Girl

Taken from the only LP by Float Up CP, 1985's 'Kill Me In The Morning'. Float Up CP were formed after the dissolution of Rip Rig + Panic, and featured Bruce Smith, Gareth Sager and Neneh Cherry. I have no idea what 'CP' stands for, and neither does Neneh Cherry! One single was released from the album, 'Joy's Address', with an exclusive b-side, 'Desert Heat'. This album is long out-of-print and has not had a CD release. Damn shame.

11) THE DURUTTI COLUMN - Bordeaux Sequence

From the 1987 album 'The Guitar And Other Machines', produced by Stephen Street. Working with Vini Reilly on this record led to Reilly being the guitarist and co-writer of many of the tracks on Morrissey's Stephen Street-produced debut LP 'Viva Hate' the following year. Factory Benelux has reissued the majority of The Durutti Column's records in lovely deluxe editions (CD and vinyl), and The Guitar And Other Machines received a nice 3xCD/2xLP reissue back in 2018. Get it directly from FBN here.

12) ULTRA VIVID SCENE - Extra CD Track

Yes, this song is called 'Extra CD Track', as it was left off the vinyl release. However, I also have the cassette of this album where this song appears, still called 'Extra CD track'. All of Ultra Vivid Scene's records are long out of print, but are well worth tracking down. Kurt Ralske does not seem to have any interest in his old music whatsoever, happily retiring from music for a career in academia. It is unlikely that UVS material will be reissued by 4AD because of this, however I can only imagine how great a UVS box set would be with all the scattered b-sides collected, and maybe even some unheard live recordings.

SECRET SAUCES RADIO IDENT

Bill Hicks - Can't Breathe Out Of My Right Lung

An excerpt from 'Rant In E-Minor: Variations', a 2016 2xCD/2xLP release of a full show used for the posthumous 'Rant In E-Minor' album in 1997 that includes music composed by Bill. The original 'Rant In E-Minor' album was released by Rykodisc on CD and cassette and has sadly never been released on vinyl. Comedy Dynamics has been in control of the Hicks catalogue for over a decade now and while they have released several 'new' records on vinyl, they have never released any of the original 4 - I don't know why. Anyhow, the Rant In E-Minor album is fucking furious from start to finish, it was mostly recorded on tour after Bill learned he had terminal cancer in 1993, and he just didn't give a fuck anymore - highly recommended. Bill Hicks sadly passed away in 1994 aged 32, with his career on an upward trajectory. He did not fake his death to become Alex Jones and if you believe that and spread such misinformation, you are a cunt.

13) TROTSKY ICEPICK - Nightingale Drive

From Trotsky Icepick's 1986 album 'Poison Summer'. There is a long, convoluted history about that record which I have already gone over in the first show notes, so I will direct you to those - here. Trotsky Icepick are an excellent band with an excellent discography, and they're still making new music. Check out their Bandcamp page here for new material and remastered/remixed digital reissues of old stuff. Physical records can be ordered from their own Poison Summer records site in the US here.

14) STEREOLAB - Percolator

Taken from the groop's 1996 fourth album 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup', which was named after the experimental 1970 Japanese film directed by Shūji Terayama. The artwork for the album is based on the 1964 UK sleeve for Heinrich Hollreiser and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's recording of Béla Bartók's 'Concerto For Orchestra'. Check it out on Discogs here. Stereolab often used old sleeves for their record releases, there are lots of other examples of this.

Duophonic/Warp reissued most of the Stereolab catalogue as deluxe editions on CD and vinyl in 2019, and the Emperor Tomato Ketchup reissue includes a few outtakes and original mixes alongside several demos. Duophonic recently announced that they are deleting the deluxe vinyl reissues, so get looking second-hand if you want the bonus material on vinyl.

15) THE GO! TEAM - Rolling Blackouts

This is the title track from The Go! Team's third album released in 2011. That is Bethany Cosentino (from Best Coast, now a solo artist) on vocals - she also sang on the track 'Buy Nothing Day' from this album. Check out The Go! Team's website here, and try to catch them live if you can because they are excellent live.

16) THE THE - Waitin' For The Upturn

This track has a long, convoluted history which will be discussed in depth in a forthcoming SECRET SAUCES exploration of 'the unreleased works of Matt Johnson/The The' - so I won't go into it here. In a nutshell, this song was released as the 12" b-side to 'Uncertain Smile' in 1982, but is likely a re-recording of a track from an unreleased album entitled 'The Pornography Of Despair'. You can also find this song as a bonus track on original European cassette releases of the 1983 album 'Soul Mining'. Keep an eye on SECRET SAUCES for that The The article, it'll be great. I will update this once it is published.
