A swarm of bees! One hour of some good b-sides. Here are some notes on the seventeenth Secret Sauces Radio show, which can be listened to on Mixcloud here...
SECRET SAUCES RADIO INTRO IDENT
Jackass "The Beekini" sample
A very early Jackass clip, from the first season on MTV back in 2000. Watch the full clip here.
1) BUZZCOCKS - Oh Shit!
The b-side to the 1978 classic single 'What Do I Get?'. Both sides of the single subsequently appeared on the legendary singles comp 'Singles Going Steady' the following year, and out-of-print deluxe CD reissues of 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen' in 2008.
2) INSPIRAL CARPETS - Out Of Time
A b-side to the 1989 single 'Move', this track appeared on all three formats - 7", 12" and CD. The track was then featured on the 1990 U.S.-only. 'Cool As **** E.P.' but did not feature on the b-sides disc of the 2003 'Cool As' box set. Fascinating.
3) R.E.M. - Bandwagon
Originally released as the b-side to 'Cant Get There From Here' back in 1985, the track was then featured with 14 other I.R.S.-era b-sides on the 1987 'Dead Letter Office' collection.
4) THE YOUNG KNIVES - We Are The Also Rans
An earlier recording of this song was self-released by the band in 2004 on the very hard to find demo album 'Nolens Volens', but this new recording first appeared as a b-side to 'Here Comes The Rumour Mill' in 2006, appearing on the CD single only. As with all singles released from their 2006 album 'Voices Of Animals And Men' two 7" singles were released alongside the CD, all with different b-sides ('The Decision' actually had three 7" singles and two CD singles, as it was released originally in 2005 and reissued in 2006). 'We Are The Also Rans' received a vinyl release for the first time in 2023 on the double-vinyl reissue of the album entitled 'Voices Of Animals And Men And Shouts And Screams And Groans'... and the band dropped the 'The' from their name for this reissue. No CD release for that reissue, sadly.
5) THE STYLE COUNCIL - Party Chambers
The b-side to the debut Style Council single, 'Speak Like A Child', which was highly anticipated after Paul Weller ending The Jam only a few months prior. A different recording of this song was released on the 'À Paris' EP a couple of months after. This piano version was subsequently reissued on the 1993 compilation 'Here's Some That Got Away', and the original version was reissued on the 1998 box set 'The Complete Adventures Of The Style Council'.
6) DE LA SOUL - Freedom Of Speak (We Got Three Minutes)
Released on the debut 12" single by De La Soul, technically this is a double A-side. The original release had Plug Tunin'/Freedom Of Speak on the A-Side, and different versions of both tracks on the b-side, along with 'Strictly Dan Stuckie'.
Jackass "Beehive Tetherball" sample
A clip of wildlife expert Manny Puig telling Dave England and Steve-O how many bee stings it takes to kill a man. This clip is from the 2010 movie Jackass 3D. Watch the full clip here.
7) BULLY - Faceblind
This was the b-side to 'Milkman' in 2014, released on 7" vinyl only. Like the 2013 Bully EP, the recording of Milkman is different to the one found on 'Feels Like' the following year. This track has not appeared elsewhere and is not available to purchase digitally either. Rare!
8) THE SMITHS - Rubber Ring
Released as a b-side (12" only) to 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' in 1985. The 12" version segues nicely into the other b-side 'Asleep'. Rubber Ring subsequently appeared in a slightly truncated form (without the segue) on the 1987 compilations 'The World Won't Listen' and 'Louder Than Bombs'. The 'full version' was released on the 2017 deluxe edition of 'The Queen Is Dead'.
9) SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES - Tattoo
The b-side to the Banshees' cover of The Beatles' 'Dear Prudence' in 1983. It first received a CD reissue on the fantastic (long out of print, and long overdue a reissue) b-sides box set 'Downside Up', but has found enough popularity to be included on the cheapo 2015 compilation CD 'Spellbound: The Collection'.
10) THE FALL - Petty (Thief) Lout
The b-side (12" only) to the double-A-side single 'Couldn't Get Ahead/Rollin' Dany' in 1985. Subsequently released on the Beggars Banquet-era b-sides comp '458489 B-Sides' in 1990, and the 'Omnibus Edition' box set of 'This Nation's Saving Grace' in 2011.
Jackass "Beehive Tetherball" sample
Another clip from the same scene as earlier from Jackass 3D, where Dave England has had enough of being stung by bees.
11) THROWING MUSES - Like A Dog
Released as a b-side to 'Bright Yellow Gun' in 1994, and available on all 4 formats (7", 12", cassette and CD). Subsequently released on the second disc in the limited deluxe edition of 2011's 'Anthology' compilation.
12) SUEDE - Bentswood Boys
First released as a b-side to 'New Generation' in 1994, the final single from Suede's second album 'Dog Man Star'. This, along with other track on the flipside of the 12" (technically AA-sides but everyone regards them as b-sides!), 'Together', were the first co-writes with brand new 17 year old guitarist Richard Oakes after the departure of Bernard Butler during the recording of Dog Man Star. Those two tracks subsequently appeared on the 1997 b-sides collection 'Sci-Fi Lullabies'. Another Dog Man Star-era b-side, 'Asda Town' (a solo Brett Anderson composition) joins these two in being banished from any reissues of Dog Man Star, so you will find those on one of the million reissues of 'Coming Up' that Edsel have released, instead.
13) XTC - Heaven Is Paved With Broken Glass
This was released as a b-side (12" only) to 'Ball And Chain'. It was subsequently remixed for the 'Beeswax' compilation later that year, and that is the same version that appeared on the 1990 'Rag And Bone Buffet' compilation. This original mix has never been reissued since 1982, and I prefer this one personally.
14) BELLY - Dream On Me
This was released as a track on the 'Feed The Tree' EP in 1993, and appears as the sole b-side on the 7" single release of that track. It next appeared on the oddly compiled 2002 compilation 'Sweet Ride: The Best Of Belly', and then in 2021 on the 'Bees' compilation of b-sides.
'Angry Bee Swarm Attacks Volunteer Police Officer On Live TV' sample
"It's like a scene from a horror movie... the bees don't stop!". Watch the full clip here.
15) THE THE - The Nature Of Virtue (Version II)
There's a long story involving a lost The The album entitled 'The Pornography Of Despair' (look out for Issue 2 of Secret Sauces coming soon!), and 'The Nature Of Virtue' is a track from those sessions. Two versions were released, 'Version I' for the 7", and 'Version II' for the 12". This is Version II, likely a re-recording meant for release as a b-side, rather than Version I which was likely from the original PoD album. This version was released on CD in 1989 for a special 'picture disc' version of 'Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)', but with a minute or so of the end chopped off. You may notice that there is a slight change in quality in the final minute here on Secret Sauces Radio - that is because I spliced together the CD version and the end of a needledrop of the vinyl about 8 years ago and I haven't been arsed to do it better since. Sorry.
16) PRINCE - Erotic City
This is the original 7" version, the b-side to 'Let's Go Crazy' from 1984. As with most Prince As and Bs, the 12" is a very different beast. Check out the Erotic City (Make Love Not War Erotic City Come Alive) extended version which is almost double the length. You can find that on the shoddy 2017 3CD+DVD reissue of 'Purple Rain' which I hope gets re-done at some point. Horrible mastering.
17) PUBLIC ENEMY - B-Side Wins Again
This is the original version released as the b-side to 'Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos' in 1989. You may be more familiar with the 'new' version, which was released on the album 'Fear Of A Black Planet' in 1990. This original 12" version was subsequently reissued on the 2014 2CD/DVD deluxe edition of 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'.
